Look at http://www.childnet.com/kia/sen/ for more specific information on e-safety for SEN children and young people

New for September 2009-OFSTED inspection on Safeguarding issues

On 12 March 2009, Lord Laming published his report The Protection of Children in England: A Progress Report. The Government accepted all of his recommendations.

Schools and LSCBs should be aware that OFSTED has reviewed their framework in light of the recommendations. From September 2009 OFSTED inspectors will be looking at the 'effectiveness of safeguarding procedures'. If schools are judged to be inadequate in this strand, its is likely to be judged to be inadequate overall.

Government response to Lord Lamings report

On 12 March, Lord Laming published his report The Protection of Children in England: A Progress Report. The Government accepted all of his recommendations and has now published an action plan, setting out its detailed response.
The Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families has written to schools to highlight the importance of this action plan and of the role that teachers and other staff have in keeping children safe from abuse.

In particular the following para will be of interest to those involved in e-safety:

32. Ofsted have also designed the new school inspection framework which will apply from September 2009 so that it will have a stronger focus on safeguarding. The current inspection framework already includes a judgement about whether safeguarding arrangements in schools are satisfactory but this will be strengthened in the new framework with a grading on a scale from 1(outstanding) to 4(inadequate) for a school's safeguarding arrangements. Any school which receives a grade of 4 will also be likely to be awarded an inadequate grade for its overall performance and will need therefore to make urgent improvements. These arrangements will 'raise the bar' about the importance of safeguarding for schools and will also facilitate the identification and dissemination of best practice.

New Law regarding extreme pornographic images

A new law has now entered the statute books in the UK as of Monday 26th January 2008. The notes below are a brief explanation of the law. It is clear that current acceptable use policies and the discipline code within schools would not sanction such material. The change however relates to the criminalisation of such images as described and relevant punishments.

Each person has their own responsibility for staying within the law. It may be fair however to ensure that users of the computers systems in South East schools are made aware of the new law.

OFSTED-a response to the Byron Review

This briefing note has been compiled in response to the request, in the Byron Review of e-safety in schools, for a short study of what schools are saying in their self-evaluation forms about e-safety. Ofsted conducted a small-scale study of 100 self-evaluation forms of schools that were being inspected in the summer term 2008. The study found considerable variation in how schools monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of their e-safety policies. A considerable proportion of schools do not indicate how they know whether their policies are effective or not in ensuring learners? e-safety.

Filtering for internet terrorism

State-of-the art filtering technology will allow parents, schools, businesses and web users to further restrict access to websites advocating or promoting terrorism.
Following joint work between the internet industry and government, web users now have the opportunity to download software allowing them to restrict access to websites that may encourage the endorsement or participation in acts of terrorism.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith announced the initiative so parents and guardians of vulnerable young people can further enhance internet safety for their home computers.
The software can be downloaded voluntarily and is available to parents, schools, colleges and businesses.

TeachersTV programme on teaching safety while online

This programme outlines simple classroom activities to help teachers to take practical steps to keep pupils safe online and to increase awareness of the potential dangers of internet usage.

E-safety consultant Dr Alan Beecham visits Rhodesway Secondary School in Bradford to work with a group of Year 9 students. Humanities teacher Haroon Gardee and Year 7 inclusion manager Max Crowther join Dr Beecham to gauge pupils' reaction to a fictitious profile they created on a social networking site.

Another activity highlights the dangers of sharing too much information, while a further task focuses on security and privacy settings.

At Stocksbridge High School in Sheffield, e-safety officers apply an internet safety policy, run parental awareness evenings, and act as a point of contact for pupils.

Teachtoday.eu delivers a strong lesson in E-safety

The launch of the TeachToday.eu website fills a major gap in the web awareness puzzle. Many teachers may feel the need to address the e-safety issues in class but fear that they know less about the new technologies than their pupils; others consider that such issues should indeed be addressed in school but don't know how to tackle a topic that is outside the official curriculum and therefore unsupported.
